About US

We are Jerry and Sydney Hong, the owners and operators of Encore in Nanaimo, B.C.

With over 35 years of combined experience in the event industry, we’ve had the opportunity to host and manage a wide variety of successful events across Vancouver Island, including festivals, community celebrations, concerts, and fundraisers. Through Encore, we’ve also gained extensive experience in the wedding industry, helping couples bring their vision to life while navigating the many details and challenges that come with planning such an important day.

Event planning and execution are what we do best, and we’re proud to share our knowledge, experience, and passion to help make your event—no matter the size—a success, too!

“Throwback to where it all began: our wedding.

We had purchased tents for our wedding at a farm in Cedar, BC, but just one month before our big day, our venue cancelled. We panicked. We scrambled. We searched for another outdoor venue that could capture the casual, warm, and inviting atmosphere we had envisioned, but we were at a loss so close to our date.

Then a friend recommended Camp Caillet in Nanaimo. This is a Scout camp, but it was central for both of our families so we figured we’d give it a shot. The moment we stepped onto the venue, it gave me all the feels! It had exactly the natural, relaxed environment we were hoping for. So that’s where we decided to get married.

We purchased and borrowed an extraordinary amount of lights to turn the place into pure magic. Jerry set up our tents for the first time—four times if he’s telling the story. And ‘we’ learned that getting the location of the tents right the first time is important (for Jerry’s time and energy that is).

It was beautiful.

Having spent much of our relationship operating a nightclub and a live music venue, we knew we wanted our wedding to be more than just a ceremony — we wanted it to be a party!

And it was.

There were food trucks, an open bar, a makeshift dance floor, and incredible music. We also added some cultural elements with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and a lion dance. It was a mashup of cultures that perfectly fit… us.

And it rained.

We got wet. Our dresses and shoes got muddy. Our hair and makeup was a mess. Our jackets were soaked through. This was not what I had planned. But rain on your wedding day is good luck, right? We realized gutter guards and heaters would have been helpful—another lesson learned to pass on to others. Always. prepare. for. rain. on. the. WET. coast.

Looking back, the immense joy that we have when telling stories of our wedding makes me forget about all the things that didn’t go “according to plan."

I’ve been told many times that our wedding was the best wedding that most people had ever been to. It was the best one I’d ever been to, obviously. But we also learned a lot that day. The challenge and the excitement of this day got Jerry and I hooked. We wanted to be a part of not only the joy that weddings and events bring, but also the planning and problem solving that often comes hand in hand. We knew we could use our event experience (and new-found wedding experience) to help others.

Fast forward eight years (and a whole lot of newly purchased equipment later), Encore has become our primary focus — helping more than 1,200 couples and event organizers bring their celebrations to life.

Just like our wedding, our career path didn’t unfold exactly the way we originally planned. It turned out even better.

We get to be part of some of the biggest, most meaningful moments in people’s lives — an honour we never take for granted. We’re incredibly grateful for the trust you place in us, and we hope to keep celebrating alongside you for many years to come.

They also set up the tent for us, and having set up large tents for other events in the past, this was a HUGE relief. “HIRE THEM!!!! tents went up and came down with zero issues, everyone loved the lighting and the space these tents had. Sydney and Jerry are great at communicating and helping with your every need. The price is great but the help is better. They have an amazing bar you can rent with an ice well and bar mats!
