We are Jerry and Sydney Hong, the owners and operators of Encore in Nanaimo, B.C.

With over 25 years combined experience in event management for concerts, fundraisers and beer gardens, we are honoured to share our expertise and knowledge so you get the most out of your special events and celebrations.

“Throwback to where it all began: our wedding

We had purchased tents for our wedding at a farm in Cedar, BC. Unfortunately, just one month before our date, our venue cancelled. We panicked and scrambled to find another outdoor venue, until our friend recommended Camp Caillet in Nanaimo. This venue was central to our families and had the outdoor/casual feel we were hoping for. It was warm and inviting and gave me all the feels. So that’s where we decided to get married! We purchased and borrowed an extraordinary amount of lights to turn the place into pure magic. Having operated a nightclub and a live music venue for the better part of our relationship, we wanted our wedding to be a fun party — which it was, with food trucks, an open bar, a makeshift dance floor and awesome music. We also added some cultural elements with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and lion dance. It was a mashup of cultures that perfectly fit… us.

It rained on this day (of course) so we got wet. Our dresses and shoes got a little muddy, our hair and makeup got messed, jackets were soaked… but looking back, the immense joy that I have when we tell stories of our wedding makes me forget about all the things that didn’t go “according to plan.”

I’ve been told many times that our wedding was the greatest wedding that most people had ever been to. It was the greatest one I’d ever been to, obviously. But we also learned a lot that day — most importantly: how to properly plan for rain. The challenge and the excitement of this day got Jerry and I hooked. We wanted to be apart of the joy that weddings and events bring, and we knew we could use our event knowledge and new-found wedding experience to help others.

Fast forward 7 years (and a bunch of newly purchased equipment later), Encore has become our primary focus, assisting more than 500 couples with their dream weddings. Similarly to our wedding, our career paths didn’t go according to our original plan. It’s turned out even better. We get to relish in the joy of the biggest moments in your life. An honour we’re thankful to hold and hope to continue doing for many years to come.

“HIRE THEM!!!! tents went up and came down with zero issues, everyone loved the lighting and the space these tents had. Sydney and Jerry are great at communicating and helping with your every need. The price is great but the help is better. They have an amazing bar you can rent with an ice well and bar mats! “The non-profit organization that I work for, the Old City Quarter Association, utilized Encore Event Rentals for a fundraiser pancake breakfast at Christmas time. They were extremely affordable and 100% professional. Jerry was at the location at 7 am setting up the tents, tables & chairs and the heaters. He was patient with showing us how to put up the tents and worked fast, as I only had one other volunteer to help.
